Cranbrook Union Windmill

Cranbrook Union Windmill

Date: August 2024
Location:  Kent
public/abandoned - Public

We're currently on the "Wheel of Time" trail with my 4-year-old, and we've been searching for new places to explore. This location was on our list, so I checked their Facebook page to see when they would be open next. It turned out that they had an open day on the bank holiday Monday, so we got in the car and headed to Cranbrook before going camping. I have to say, I was amazed by the windmill, and the fact that my daughter got to make some flour was a great experience. The mill itself was extremely interesting and definitely worth a visit.

It is said that Cranbrook Union Mill is a Grade 1 listed building and has been restored to be a working mill. The mill, built around 1814 just after the end of the Napoleonic War, was modernized around 1840. In 1960, the mill was taken over by Kent County Council, who restored the mill. In 1982, the Cranbrook Windmill Association was formed to look after the mill.
