Wouldham Cement works Remains

After cycling for approximately three hours from our starting point, we finally arrived in Wouldham, eager to explore the historic remains of the cement works. However, much to our dismay, we discovered that the entire site had been completely demolished.

While we stood there, a local resident out for a walk with their dog paused to chat with us. They explained that the area had recently been cleared to make room for new housing developments, marking a significant change in the landscape. Feeling a mixture of disappointment and curiosity, we learned that the cement works, which once played an important role in the local industry, had been replaced by plans for modern homes. This news highlighted the ongoing transformation of the area and left us reflecting on the history that had been lost.

Buried Room - Brompton - Medway

During my exploration of Brompton in search of a new location, I unexpectedly came across a structure that was partially buried in mud. Upon closer inspection, it appeared to be a small room, intriguingly concealed from plain sight. The entrance was obscured, making it a challenge to discover. This area is steeped in rich historical significance, particularly related to past wars, which leaves me pondering the purpose of this hidden room. Could it have been a secret shelter, a storeroom for supplies, or perhaps a command post? The mystery surrounding its use adds to the allure of this forgotten space.

Pillbox / out building - Upnor Medway

Throughout the Medway area, there are numerous structures known as pillboxes, which were built during World War II for defensive purposes. This particular building has features that suggest it might be a pillbox; however, we are uncertain due to the wide variety of designs and sizes that pillboxes can take. Additionally, it is possible that this structure serves as one of the ancillary outbuildings associated with a larger facility, but despite our efforts, we have been unable to locate any information online that clarifies its original purpose or historical significance. Further research may be necessary to accurately identify this building and its role in the area's historical landscape.

Upnor - Sealed air-raid shelter

We spent the day exploring various locations in Medway, immersing ourselves in the area's rich history. During our explorations, we heard about a nearby air-raid shelter that piqued our interest. Curious to learn more about its purpose and history, we decided to check it out. However, when we arrived, we discovered that the shelter was locked, preventing us from getting a closer look. While we were unable to enter, we speculated about the shelter's use during wartime and how it might have served the local community. Given that Medway is known for having many air-raid shelters dispersed throughout the region, we wondered about the stories and experiences of the people who utilized these havens during troubling times. The thought of the shelter's history and its significance to the locals added an intriguing layer to our exploration.

Acorn shipping yard - Rochester

This was our first attempt to explore the building, and we had hoped to gain insight into the surrounding structures. However, we quickly discovered that several of them were still in use, which restricted our access. As we approached the old, burnt-down huts, a man stationed nearby began to shout at anyone who ventured too close, warning us to stay away. Despite this, we managed to walk along the scenic riverside path that ran parallel to the ruins, observing the remnants from a safe distance. Regrettably, I was unable to uncover any historical information about this intriguing location. I learned that in 2017, a devastating fire swept through the area, leading to the permanent closure of the site and leaving behind a haunting reminder of its past.

Moat Park Boathouse - Maidstone

As we wandered through the winding paths of Moat Park, searching for the entrance to the old mines, we unexpectedly came across a fascinating building. Its architecture was both intriguing and mysterious, but we couldn’t quite determine what its function had been. The structure seemed to loom over us, shrouded in a sense of history, and we were filled with curiosity about the stories it might hold. We paused to examine its features, hoping to glean some clues about its purpose in days gone by.
