we drove just over 1hr and a bit to go and see this fort - once we arrived i looked through the fence at the old battery that sit in the carpark and then headed into the main fort itself, the fort itself is a fair size fort and has lots of stuff around it and lots of information within the rooms - the only thing that let down today was the wind and rain :(
so it said that the fort was built to help defend that approch to harwich harbor- back in 1667 , the fort was built in 18th century but was modifications done to it in 19 & 20th centuries. it also said the fort was used in both warts - and in the cold war the old gun case mate was converted into contorl rooms the fort was disarmed and closed in 1956 but took over by english heritage in 1997/8
