I was heading to Rochester when I bumped into a few friends of mine, and we started chatting. They were on their way to the Featherstone LTD building, so I thought I would join them. I had always passed by this building and wondered what it was like inside.

I've been aware of this display at the beautiful Rochester Cathedral for a while now, and I kept meaning to go see it. So, on Saturday, when I had a hair appointment, I thought I would stop by the cathedral on my way back to my car to check it out. It was pretty amazing to see, and the aircraft is much larger than I expected.

According to the history board in front of the display, the aircraft was designed by the Shorts Brothers in 1933 and could hold 4-6 people. It also mentioned that only 22 planes were built, and they were used for various services. This model, G-AZF, was the last of six to be built and was completed in 1937.

After this plane was decommissioned, it was left to deteriorate. However, in June 2013, the remains of the plane were acquired by MAPSL, which restored it thanks to a grant from Rochester Bridge.

I have known about UCA since it closed down in 2023, but for some reason, I never really attempted to explore it. Back in 2024, I did try once, but there was no way in, so I took some photos through the window and then left. 

Then in 2025, the university started getting visited by urban explorers, local kids, and copper thieves. I told myself I wouldn't bother exploring it. 

Fast forward to June; my best friend came to visit overnight, and we decided to check out the university. We got my almost five-year-old ready, and we went to explore. We spent about two hours inside the university. During that time, there was another group of people exploring too; we didn't see them, but we could hear them. 

My almost five-year-old thought the adventure was cool (she likes exploring anyway). Every mirror she found made her want to dance or have me take a photo, and when we discovered the backdrop, she wanted a mini photoshoot! 

Overall, the exploration was fun. Fun fact: I had considered attending that university back in the day

UCA announced in 2021 that it was closing its doors, and in 2023, the last group of students graduated before it closed for good. It has just been approved for flats.

I never knew about this hidden little gem in Rochester until a friend of mine told me about it. It's located in the Rochester airport and is free to visit. 

There's a lot to explore, including various exhibits related garage  It's ideal for anyone who enjoys that kind of thing. It's genuinely interesting!
