Fort Clarance ( West Case Mate) Remains - Rochester

Fort Clarence Remains

Date:   March 2014

Location: Rochester

Demolished:  Yes/No

Fort Clearance is believed to have been constructed in 1808 and served as a defensive structure during wartime to protect the nearby towns. After its decommissioning, the fort was converted into residential buildings, although the tunnels were left abandoned. In 2017, a significant drug bust took place in the West Casemate Tunnels, as they connect to the houses. During my exploration of the West Casemates, I was unaware of what lay behind a sealed door. This area was once known as "Dead Man Drop," where we often played on tire swings in my youth..
