Cockham Wood Fort - Medway

Cookham Wood Fort

Date:  June

Location:  Medway

Public or Abandoned:  Public

Demolished:  No

The Cookham Wood Fort was constructed in 1667 but was eventually abandoned in 1818 and left to decay along the Medway River. If you take the beach route from Upnor Pillbox, you will eventually reach the fort, but be cautious of the tides to avoid getting stranded. Although it is part of the Saxon Shore Walk, the fort has mostly eroded due to weather and saltwater. Nonetheless, it is still an intriguing site to explore, showcasing an earlier fortification design. Despite this, there are no underground tunnels to be found. If you plan to visit the fort, take extra precautions as the area can be slippery.
