Fort Clarance Remains - Rochester

Fort Clarence Remains

Date:   March 2014

Location: Rochester

Public or Abandoned:  50/50 ( tunnels abandoned fort not)

Demolished:  Yes/No

It is believed that Fort Clearance was constructed in 1808 and served as a defensive structure during wartime to safeguard the towns. After its decommissioning, the fort was converted into residential buildings, but the tunnels were left deserted. In 2017, there was a significant drug bust in the West Casemate Tunnels as they connect to the houses..

During my exploration of the West Casemates, I was unaware of what lay behind a sealed door. This area was once referred to as "Dead Man Drop," and in my youth, we would often play on tire swings that were located there..
