North Entrance Bridge - Dover

Back in Dover once again to explore more of the places we had missed, we headed to the North Entrance. This was definitely an interesting location, although we had no way of getting inside the tunnels since access was restricted. Later, we discovered online that there is an open day once a year when visitors can enter. Several websites mentioned that the North Entrance is a good example of fortification. It served as the main road until 1960, but starting in the 1860s, a new road was constructed that ultimately destroyed much of what was there before. The North Entrance was also used during the wars. After the new road was built, about two-thirds of the water tanks were destroyed and repurposed as dumping grounds. However, one of the water tanks still remains intact. Once the new military road was established, the site fell into disrepair and was abandoned."

Staples Chatham

We live in the Medway towns and knew that the Staples store was closing down, so we decided to visit the store to retrieve some pictures before it disappeared forever. The store has since been replaced by a B&M store. The Staples store closed its doors in January 2017.

Hellingly hospital - East Sussex

After discovering this place online, I was really excited to explore the hospital. We met up with some friends and headed there, but unfortunately, it was sealed off, and there was no way to get in. Although we were a bit disappointed, we didn’t let it get us down and decided to move on to our next location. According to what we read, Hellingly Hospital was once part of the East Sussex County Asylum, which was a large psychiatric hospital that eventually closed down. It was located in a village.

Fort Darland / Gordon barracks - Gillingham Bussniess park - Medway

There is a tank located where Fort Darland, also known as Gordon Barracks, once stood many years ago. While there is some speculation about the exact location of Fort Darland, we used to pass by this tank while visiting the business park. We stopped to take a look and capture some photos of it. Fort Darland was a Victorian fort built in 1870 and remained standing until the 1960s, when it was demolished to make way for the business site that now occupies the area. The plaque reads: "This monument commemorates the fact that the Gillingham Business Park is built on the site of Fort Darland, later named Gordon Barracks. It served as the training center for the 'Darland Boys' from 1939 to 1941, was part of the School of Military Engineering from 1950 to 1966, and was home to the Royal Engineer Officer Cadet Squadron from 1950 to 1961."

Wardens Point Battery & Chain house - Sheerness

We decided to spend the weekend in Sheerness just for fun and thought about heading down to Warden Point to see the Battery and Chain House. However, it's important to check the tide times beforehand; otherwise, you won't be able to get close to them. 

Over the years, the site has eroded and fallen into the sea. It is said that the Warden Point Battery was built around 1914, and a temporary radar station was installed in 1916. In 1942, the site became permanent. It is unclear when the site was abandoned.
