Dumpy B / Archcliffe galliers / Drop Redoute - Magazine Rooms

Dumpy B / Archcliffe  / Drop Redoute - Magazine Rooms

                                           Location:  Dover
                                           Abandoned or Public : abandoned

"I just wanted to quickly share that I recently visited some places that I have reported on many times in my blog. While showing some people around the area, I took some photos. Unfortunately, everything except for Archcliffe has become more decayed and overgrown."

Archcliffe Galleries

Archcliffe is a place I always seem to go back to when I'm in Dover, and each time nothing has changed. This visit was also quick, and I was in and out within 10 minutes.

The history of this place is a bit tough to find, and I can't seem to find much information. It is said that it used to be part of a Napoleonic fort that got distorted when a new road was built.

Dumpy B:

I've visited Dumpy B a few times, and the place always gives me the creeps. Sadly, it has become more decayed and seems to be getting more dangerous to be in. During my quick visit, I was in and out within about 20 minutes.

The bunker was built in late 1942 and was one of the Joint Operation headquarters. It's said that NT (National Trust) is trying to make it safe, similar to what they did with Fan Bay, but nothing has come of it yet.

Drop Redoubt Battery

I have only been here once in the past and then forgot about it until recently. It has become very overgrown and forgotten about, sadly.

It's said that the planning started around 1853 and had 8-8" guns but changed to 42" in 1868. The magazine room was added around 1876 but seems to be the only visible thing to this date.

Drop Redoubt - Dover

 Drop Redoubt

 Date: June
Location: Dover
Public or Abandoned: public  ( Once a year )
Demolished: No

I first discovered drop readout back in 2017 when I first ever started my Dover Explore series, For Some reason I always seemed to miss the open days for drop Redoute and I kept telling myself I will get to an open day, I saw there was the open day this year ( 24/25 June) and knew i could make the 24th, so after going to a birthday party in the morning with my LG we then headed up to Dover to go drop readout. we got there late afternoon which was nice as there less people than there has been due to the day but the downside was the weather was stupid hot still, but the breeze was nice around the fort, my LG enjoyed walking around the fort too - it was £5 admission or £2.50 being English H members which is nice too. the fort was a bit smaller than I expected but still was good

so it said that Drop Redoubt is just 1/2 fort around the Dover western highest area, It said that the construction off the ort was done in 1804- 1808 ( Napoleonic wars ) and the second part of construction from the 1859- 1864
the fort was used in both world war 1 and world war 2 but was abandoned between wars , after ww2 the fort was abandoned permanently .

Unsure when English H took over the site, but it does say online In 2003 the Western heights preservation mange ths site with cleaning it up and open day on behalf of English H

Drop Redoubt & Drop Battery - Dover

Drop Redoubt & Drop Battery

Date:   June 2017

Location: Dover

Demolished:  No

This was our first stop on our exploration of Dover. As it was our first time in Dover, we began by visiting Drop Redoubt and Drop Battery, which are located next to each other. Unfortunately, we were unable to enter Drop Redoubt as it was sealed off. Later, we discovered that it can be visited on open days, which we plan to take advantage of in the future. Overall, it was a satisfying day of exploring Dover. Regarding Drop Battery, the planning for its construction began around 1853, and work started soon after planning approval was granted. Initially equipped with eight 8-inch guns, the armament was upgraded to 42 guns in 1868. A magazine was added in 1876, along with various other enhancements to the battery. As for Drop Redoubt, it is a half-fort located at the highest point in western Dover. Its construction occurred between 1804 and 1808 during the Napoleonic Wars, with additional work carried out from 1859 to 1864. The fort was used during both World War I and World War II but was abandoned in between the wars. After World War II, the fort was permanently abandoned..

Drop Redoubt
History :  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover_Western_Heights#Drop_Redoubt
The Drop Redoubt is one of the two forts on Western Heights, and is linked to the other, the Citadel, by a series of dry moats (the lines). It is, arguably, the most impressive and immediately noticeable feature on Dover’s Western Heights.
