Drop Redoubt & Drop Battery - Dover

Drop Redoubt & Drop Battery

Date:   June 2017

Location: Dover

Demolished:  No

This was our first stop on our exploration of Dover. As it was our first time in Dover, we began by visiting Drop Redoubt and Drop Battery, which are located next to each other. Unfortunately, we were unable to enter Drop Redoubt as it was sealed off. Later, we discovered that it can be visited on open days, which we plan to take advantage of in the future. Overall, it was a satisfying day of exploring Dover. Regarding Drop Battery, the planning for its construction began around 1853, and work started soon after planning approval was granted. Initially equipped with eight 8-inch guns, the armament was upgraded to 42 guns in 1868. A magazine was added in 1876, along with various other enhancements to the battery. As for Drop Redoubt, it is a half-fort located at the highest point in western Dover. Its construction occurred between 1804 and 1808 during the Napoleonic Wars, with additional work carried out from 1859 to 1864. The fort was used during both World War I and World War II but was abandoned in between the wars. After World War II, the fort was permanently abandoned..

History :  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover_Western_Heights#Drop_Redoubt
The Drop Redoubt is one of the two forts on Western Heights, and is linked to the other, the Citadel, by a series of dry moats (the lines). It is, arguably, the most impressive and immediately noticeable feature on Dover’s Western Heights.
