Drop Redoubt & Drop Battery - Dover

Drop Redoubt & Drop Battery

Date:   June 2017

Location: Dover

Public or Abandoned: Public

Demolished:  No

This was our first stop in our Dover exploration. As this was our first time ever in Dover, we started by checking out Drop Redoubt and Drop Battery, as they were next to each other. Unfortunately, we were not able to get inside Drop Redoubt as it was sealed. Later, we found out that it can be visited on open days, which we plan to do one day. Overall, it was a good day exploring Dover.

Regarding Drop Battery, it was mentioned that the planning for it started around 1853, but they started building not long after the planning was granted. It had 8 - 8" guns, but they were changed to 42 in 1868. They added a magazine in 1876, and more stuff was added to the battery.

As for Drop Redoubt, it is just 1/2 fort around the Dover western highest area. The construction of the fort was done in 1804-1808 during the Napoleonic Wars, and the second part of the construction was from 1859-1864. The fort was used in both World War 1 and World War 2 but was abandoned between wars. After WW2, the fort was abandoned permanently. .

History :  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover_Western_Heights#Drop_Redoubt
The Drop Redoubt is one of the two forts on Western Heights, and is linked to the other, the Citadel, by a series of dry moats (the lines). It is, arguably, the most impressive and immediately noticeable feature on Dover’s Western Heights.
