We had a straightforward yet enjoyable experience as we explored the St. Martin Battery, a historical site open to the public. The battery, which is situated in a picturesque location, provided us with fascinating views and insights into its past. Although we were eager to discover the deep shelter that lies within the facility, we were disappointed to find it sealed off and inaccessible during our visit.
After thoroughly examining the rest of the battery, which showcases its impressive architecture and historical significance, we decided to move on to our next destination since we were operating under a tight schedule.
The St. Martin Battery was constructed in the 1870s and is notable for its impressive artillery, featuring three 10-inch rifled muzzle-loading (RML) guns. These guns were a significant part of coastal defense in their time and offer a glimpse into military engineering of the period. The battery also overlooks the western docks, providing a strategic vantage point that would have been crucial for its historical role in protecting the harbor. Despite not being able to access the deep shelter, our visit to the St. Martin Battery was informative and memorable, enriching our understanding of the area's military history.
