Champagne Caves - Dover

Champagne Caves

date : Feb 2018
Location : dover
Statuts : abandoned

This was our first exploration of the day. To start off, we decided to check out the champagne caves. I had known about these caves for about 3 or 4 years, but for some reason, I never got around to visiting them. After some climbing, we were inside. I have to say, I was amazed at how big and echoey it was inside. I was not expecting it to be so large.

It is said that the tunnels probably resulted from the chalk being mined for lime burning in the nearby kiln back in the 19th century. There may have been a second floor, hence the high walls. It is also said that over the years it had different names.
Additionally, it is said that the caves were used as a temporary fire station, a bomb store, and an air raid shelter in the Second World War.
