Shorts Tunnels - Rochester Medway

Short Tunnels

Date:   Jan 2015

Location: Medway

Demolished:  No

This wasn't my first time exploring the tunnels; I had visited them before in 2013 and 2014. There’s something that always draws me back to the tunnels, and each time I visit, I discover different things that I hadn't seen before.

The Shorts Tunnel in Rochester is believed to date back to just before World War II. It is said to be one of the longest underground air-raid shelters in the UK. The tunnels served as air-raid shelters during the bombings and were connected to an underground factory that produced seaplanes.

Eventually, the site was abandoned, and the factory above ground was demolished as a housing company began constructing new homes. The Shorts Tunnel underground factory was left to decay.
