Founded in about 1690 by Huguenot refugees who were encouraged to settle in Faversham because French gunpowder production technology in the 17th-century was more advanced than English, the Oare Works (originally 

known as Davington Mills) slowly expanded, and was progressively modernised, throughout its working life.

This was one of the first industrial sites I ever visited, and I was amazed by how big it was. While exploring, we encountered other groups of kids and people abseiling around the industrial ruins. The site was massive, with lots of machines left behind. It's a shame the site got demolished, though!

The site had been selling mineral-rich clay known as Fillerwatch and also sold a range of wood products, all the way up to the oil industry. It was also used for cat litter. Until 1997, the Redhill site was one of three sites in the UK where this valuable substance could be quarried.

This place was really interesting, and the fact that you could walk right in was really cool to see, as places like this are rare and often heavily damaged. This bunker was used during World War II and was constructed within the caves. It would have housed 30 staff members at once in the emergency headquarters within the network of tunnels. The facility included a meeting room, a control room, bedrooms for the night staff, and other necessary amenities. The site was in use 24 hours a day.
