WT Henley // AEI Cable Works Air Raid Shelter - Northfleet gravened

Northfleet Air-raid shelter

Date: April 2016

Location: Northfleet - Gravesend

Demolished:  No

We were among the first people to explore a site in Gravesend. It took us some time to find the entrance, and for the first time in my life, I felt scared going through an opening because I thought I might get stuck. However, the entrance was intriguing. Once we were inside, the tunnels were quite clean and appeared to be largely untouched. It was nice to see such a well-maintained shelter.

During the war, the site was refurbished in 1939, and an air-raid shelter was added in Cliffe. German bombers targeted this company primarily due to the power cables and switchgear it manufactured..

Rosherville Gardens - Northfleet / Gravesend

Rosherville gardens

Date: April 2016

Location: Northfleet - Gravesend

Demolished:  No

During our exploration of the AEI tunnels and the nearby factory, we decided to visit Rosherville Gardens. Although not much of the garden remained, it was still fascinating to see the remnants that were left, even though they were not easy to find. I'll admit, I am a bit scared of heights. We learned that the garden was built into a chalk pit previously owned by Jeremiah Rosher, which is likely how it got its name. Construction of the area began in 1830 when it became part of the town we now know. According to the information we found, people once visited the gardens for recreational purposes, and there used to be a bear pit there.

Cliffe cement works Remains - medway

Cliffe Cement Works

Date: Feb 2016

Location:  Cliffe - Medway

Demolished:  No

During my walk around Cliffe, I came across the remains of the old cement works. I was curious and decided to take a closer look. Unfortunately, there was not much left, just a few ruins. Despite my efforts, I couldn't find much information about the history of the cement works. The only detail I could gather was that it possibly dates back to 1866.
