Spur Tunnel Experience - Dover castle - Dover

Spur  tunnel experience

Date: August 2024
Location: Dover
public/abandoned - Public
Delmoished - No

Dover Castle is a massive place with various sections to explore. This time, we checked out the spur tunnel because it was closed during our last visit. The experience was pretty cool as we got to see bits of the castle that are not normally accessible. It's fascinating to see the tunnels, and you can walk around at your own pace, which is great.

It is said that the tunnels date back to medieval times and would have been used in the Napoleonic era.Napoleonic eara

St Marys In Castro church & Roman Light house - Dover castle - Dover

St Marys In Castro church & Roman Lighthouse

Date: August 2024
Location: Dover
public/abandoned - Public  ( Dover castle )
Delmoished - No

Since Dover Castle is a massive place, it has various sections to explore. One of these sections includes a lovely Roman lighthouse and church. The church and lighthouse are fascinating to see and the church is well-maintained. Sometimes, there will be knowledgeable people available to share the history of the church with you.

So, it is said that the church dates back to around 1020 AD. In 1582, the church was repaired and used in the 16th century. The bell was removed in 1724 when the building was in ruins, and it was used as a coal store due to the Napoleonic wars. Around the 19th century, the church was restored. It is said that the lighthouse was used as a bell tower.

Located in Dover Castle, on our recent visit, we explored some areas that I hadn't previously photographed. This time, I focused on East Battery in the castle grounds, and I have to say, it was very interesting!

East Battery was built around the 1790s as part of a program to improve the defence. The battery would have had 12 guns. In the 1860s, it was re-equipped with 9 42-pounders. The battery is a mix of English and French guns from the 18th and 19th centuries. East Battery was used in both World Wars.

This was my first time visiting Dover Castle, and wow, the castle was amazing and so big! I didn't even get to explore everything since not everything was open due to lockdown and social distancing rules, so I need to come back in the future. It is said that Dover Castle is a medieval castle and was founded in the 11th century.
