Roman painted house - Dover

 Roman Painted House

date May | Location Dover | delmosihed - No

This was a quick visit as we were doing the Wheels of Time trail. I had visited this place once before on Heritage Open Day back in 2024. such a lovely hidden gem, and it's also free to visit, with lots of rich history.

It is said that the Painted House was discovered around the 1970s during excavations on the site. It is believed to have been built around 200 AD as part of a Roman military installation. The site opened for visitors in 1977 but was closed for a time in 2022. It reopened in September 2024 for Heritage Day and open again in spring 2025.

Roman painted House - Dover

 Roman painted Hosue

 Date: September 2024

Location:  Kent
Public or abandoned - Public.

I had wanted to visit this place for years, but it had never been open. Then I saw that it was part of a heritage open day, so I jumped at the chance to go and have a look. I parked near a few other heritage sites I wanted to visit in Dover and headed to the Roman Painted House first. When I was inside, I was surprised at how cool it looked and how well it had been done. They made history fun to look at, and the best part was that entry was free!
