Location: Reigate
Public or Abandoned: Public ( Limited open day )
Demolished: No
We took a trip up to Reigate for the pre-booked tour for the tunnel road we paid £8 for two adults and 1 under 5 to go on the tour, even know we arrived a tad late they still let us in with the group, the tour itself was interesting and lasted about 45 mins and we were in a group of about 10-15 people. so were not cramped at all and were able to get the pictures we wanted to. tbh on a hot day like it was nice to be underground
So according to the Reigate website for the tunnels ( here )
it said that the tunnel road was built in 1832, and the tunnel road caves were originally opened as sand mines,
it said that the mines stop in 1860 after a massive area fell in.
in the first war, the tunnels were said to be used to store high explosives in there. and due to the second world war, they were used as an air-raid shelter for the residents.
it also said that the caves have been used as different things over the years.
