Winchelsea Caves, Dover

Winchelsea Caves, Dover

date: May 2018
Location : Dover
abandoned/Public - Abandoned
Sealed -Yes

I recently went on a quick trip to Dover to explore the Winchelsea Caves. I had heard that they were still accessible, so I headed straight for the tunnels and began exploring. Once inside, we started walking through the tunnels and climbing through small gaps. The tunnels were really interesting. As we got towards the other end, we saw workers, so I have to admit I ran with the torches!

These caves were used around 1350 during World War 2, and the conditions must have improved because the king and queen took shelter there on 18th October 1944 during a shelling raid. It's said that the queen was smiling after they emerged once the air raid was over.
