Citadel Battery - Dover

Citadel Battery

Date: 28-1-2018
Location: Dover
Access: Yes public footpath

This was one of our last explorations of the day, and we happened to do it in the dark. Thankfully, our torches still had enough charge to light the place up. Being late at night made the location feel a lot spookier than it probably was, but overall, it was still a fun little adventure. The Citadel Battery is located just outside the main fort of Western Heights. The construction of this battery began in 1898 and was completed in 1901. It was used during the wars.

"I didn't know much about this deep shelter, as we were shown it by another explorer. Getting to it was not fun as there were thorny bushes, but it was worth it in the end. I also saw a cute bat, which seems to be a common thing in tunnels around Dover. Like most shelters, it was laid out the same, so nothing amazing, but it was still cool to see."

The history of this place is somewhat unclear, with contradictory information about its past use. Some sources claim it was used during World War II, while others say it was abandoned and later used by the fire service for tunnel training during the construction of the Channel Tunnel. There isn't much else available about these tunnels.

We drove for over two hours to Portsmouth after hearing that the tunnels were open, uncertain if they would still be accessible. To our surprise, when we arrived at the entrance, the tunnels were still open. We hurried inside and began to explore. We spent about two to three hours in there, and the condition of the tunnels was amazing; everything was still in place.

It was noted that the tunnels were used during air raids, providing shelter for people during the war. Approximately 2,500 individuals used the tunnels, and during times of crisis, that number would double.
