Royal Marines Deep Refuge - Tunnels - Chatham
Royal Marines Deep Refuge Tunnels
Date: Feb 2017
Location: Chatham
Demolished: No
I first heard about this place about a year before I actually visited, thanks to a few friends on Facebook. A friend of mine also wanted to explore the tunnel, so I gave them a call, and we decided to go together.
The entrance to the tunnel was the most challenging access I've ever encountered. I later learned that it had been sealed and welded shut afterward. Once we were inside, I was amazed at how large the structure was. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to explore all the tunnels during that visit, and I had planned to return, but I never did.
The climb to some of the levels was the scariest experience I’ve ever had, as the wood was rotting away.
I couldn’t find much information regarding the history of this place, but it is said to have three floors, including an underground hospital on the top floor.
