GraylingWell Gorden Building.
Date: March 2015
Location: Chichester
Demolished: Yes
I attended university and lived right next to the asylum, always wanting to explore the remnants of the building. However, I never really had the time. One day on my day off, I decided to finally take a look at what was left of the structure.
I usually don’t explore solo, but this time I thought I would give it a try. As I was about to enter the building, I ran into a group of kids who showed me the way in. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time to investigate the interior because someone called the police, and I had to exit the building quickly.
It’s said that construction of the hospital was completed in 1894. During World War I, it was used as a military hospital, and only a portion of it was utilized during World War II.
When the hospital returned to civilian use in 1919, it became known as Graylingwell Mental Hospital. By 1920, the term "asylum" was no longer commonly used.
