Upnor Castle

Upnor castle

Location : Upnor
Date: 13-04-2019

As a local resident, I had never visited Upnor Castle, so I decided to finally make the trip. It was a lovely day, and since I’m a member of English Heritage, entry was free; otherwise, there is a small admission fee. The fort itself is small but pleasant to explore. Upnor Castle is considered a rare example of an Elizabethan artillery fort. It was built in 1559 but was redeveloped between 1599 and 1601. The fort was constructed to help protect the warships at Chatham Docks, though it ultimately failed to do so in 1667.
